I will always remember… Taking the Uncle Bijjy orangutan to school for "show and tell". When Gautam was born Uncle Bijjy wanted to give him a unique gift and as a result we acquired an extremely hairy and realistic orangutan forever referred to as the Uncle Bijjy orangutan. Gautam was absolutely terrified of it. As for me, I loved it. Eagerly anticipating Uncle Bijjy's arrival because of the fantastic food he always brought. He introduced me to "smelly" cheeses, homemade kebabs, stuffed grape leaves, falafel, kumquats, and quail eggs. Trying on clothes in Sam's extremely trendy Covent Garden Boutique famously patronized by Britney Spears… A few weeks later I am pretty sure I saw Britney Spears on an MTV show wearing a dress I saw at the store. Feeling grumpy, sleepy and a little hungry after sitting through a nine course meal at a renowned restaurant in Rheme. I was thirteen and the food was far too refined for my American palate. The then two-year old Jahnu was the only sensible one because he opted to sleep behind the table. Uncle Bijjy making funny faces… Discovering that Uncle Bijjy's name was actually Tirumal…at the age of nine. We had gone bowling with Aunty Latha and when he entered his name into the computer I had to ask 'when is "Tirumal" coming?' Watching him argue with my grandma (Grandma always won). Spending New Years Eve with the drunks in Lester Square. My mom planned the trip and Uncle Bijjy came to save us. He prevented us from getting lost in the crowds, missing the last train home, and from going hungry (he used his connections to get us a last minute reservation for twelve at an amazing Chinese restaurant in the city). Listening to the argument over who is responsible for the "Chip Butty" Sandwich (an ordinary deli sandwich with potato chips added to it) Uncle Bijjy or my mom… Uncle Bijjy may not have had the most experience entertaining little girls but he always made me feel special and I knew he loved me.
